Dr. Smith's research has been in two non-overlapping areas, marital
discord and schizophrenia, with his most recent emphasis in the
marital area. With generous funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Smith has been studying the links between
marital discord and depression. Dr. Smith's schizophrenia studies
have been in the areas of brain event-related electrical potentials
and affect. He also studies assessment and psychometrics.
Since coming to Notre Dame in 1997, Dr. Smith has taught undergraduate
Abnormal Psychology, graduate and undergraduate Marital Therapy,
graduate Assessment, and he advises undergraduate Special Studies
and Honors students who work in his research laboratory. Dr. Smith
is the Editor-in-Chief of Applied & Preventive Psychology: Current
Scientific Perspectives, published by Elsevier. He is Director of Notre Dame's Marital
Therapy and Research Clinic, and is a licensed and board-certified Psychologist. His bachelor's (Psychology) and master's (Social
Psychology) degrees are from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis,
his doctorate (Clinical Psychology) is from the State University
of New York at Stony Brook, and his internship was at Bellevue
Hospital in New York City. Dr. Smith is a Fellow in both the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology.
