Aedes aegypti Genome
Severson Lab

My laboratory has broad interest in mosquito genetics and genomics, with a primary goal of understanding the molecular genetics of disease transmission by mosquitoes. Most of our work involves the Yellow Fever and Dengue Fever virus vector Aedes aegypti. This includes development of genetic markers and the genetic dissection of phenotypes associated with competence to transmit pathogens to vertebrates. Among pathogens we work with are Dengue virus, the human lymphatic filariasis parasite Brugia malayi, and the avian bird malaria Plasmodium gallinaceum. We have a long standing collaboration on field studies in Trinidad with Dr. Dave Chadee at the University of the West Indies. We are also contributing to the Aedes aegypti Genome Project.

We have or are conducting studies with the Asian Tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens, and the LaCrosse virus vector Ochlerotatus triseriatus. Phenotypes we are interested in include vector competence, autogeny, diapause, meiotic drive and several life history traits.

Current funding sources: 1) Molecular genetics of dengue resistance in mosquitoes, 2) Diapause in Culex pipiens, and 3) Midgut bacteria in Aedes aegypti.
