Working Group 4:  Culture and Social Movements.  Lyn SpillmanUniversity of Notre Dame

The Culture and Contention working group will explore and assess recent conceptual and empirical contributions of cultural perspectives to our understanding of "Authority in Contention," and the construction and deconstruction of authority. For instance,

*Should we contrast "frame" oriented approaches to culture with "discourse" or "talk" oriented approaches?

*What are the respective advantages and disadvantages of cultural explanation in terms of narratives, identities, and practices, and how are these interrelated? How do discursive fields affect narratives, identities, and practices differently?

* Can constitutive and "resource" treatments of culture be separated? If so, for what sorts of questions are approaches focusing on constitutive dimensions of culture appropriate, and when are approaches focusing on cultural resources more useful?

*Is cultural analysis of social movements causal analysis?

*How are emotions to be understood in the cultural analysis of social movements?

*Is the concept of "cultural movement" (as distinct from political reform movements, etc) useful?

You are invited to submit short (2-5pp) discussion papers on research ideas and projects related to these issues, and to contribute other reflections and topics for discussion, to the working group listserv, CBSMGROUP4@listserv.nd.edu.  You can join the listserv when you register for the conference, or by emailing conference local co-organizer N. Eugene Walls at walls.5@nd.edu.
