As an aspirational peer of the greatest college football university of all time, I have, over the last several years, become extremely concerned over the direction of the University of Michigan fans and boosters. I fear that my fellow Wolverines have come to expect too much from our program. I wish to offer the following as reasons for a vote of confidence in Coach Llloyd Carr:
The bottom line is that Michigan cannot compete for national championships every year. Our talent can never reach the levels of contemporarily strong programs such as USC or powers with a true tradition of excellence such as Notre Dame. Despite the fact that we bring in a Top 5 recruiting class every year, Carr is reasonable in setting Michigan's goals at a Big 10 championship and to discourage the focus on a national championship. While, this viewpoint has led many around the country to joke that M stands for mediocre, just like that SNL skit, sometimes it is important to realize the value in "lowered expectations." If, as alumni and fans alike, we desire to remain on top of college football's history books, Llloyd Carr must be NOT replaced by someone with the ability to lead Michigan football back to the top. Rather, we should petition to join the MAC, as UM boasts a perfect record against teams from this powerhouse conference. |
