I am an associate professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. My research interests include political parties, agenda setting, women and politics, and American political development. My book The Politics of Women's Rights (Princeton, 2000) examines and explains the realignment of the American parties' positions on women's rights issues in the postwar period. I am currently focused on several projects: (1) using new ecological inference techniques to investigate women's voting behavior after suffrage with J. Kevin Corder (Western Michigan), (2) examining the impact of female role models on the political engagement of women and girls with David E. Campbell (Notre Dame); (3) analyzing the quality of women's representation with John Griffin (Notre Dame) and Brian Newman (Pepperdine); and (4) investigating the link between issue agenda shifts and party realignment.
