Patrick D. Gaffney
Associate Professor

Dr. Gaffney specializes in social and cultural anthropology with geographic focus on the Middle East and Central Africa. He has done extensive field work in the Arab world, especially Egypt and Jordan, as well as field experience in the Great Lakes region of Africa. His theoretical interests include systems of authority, ritual representations of spiritual and political power, religious/ethnic revivalism and related social movements, sacred rhetoric, violence and conflict resolution, and generally rites of passage. In addition to introductory courses he teaches in the anthropology of religion, culture theory, systems of solidarity, and the ethnography of the Middle East and Africa. He is currently involved in a project on globalization and violence in Africa which seeks to examine the effects of widening and intensifying market influences on state and local actors in the region.
