Deck coaming is gotten out of 1/2" X 1 3/8" mahogany. Holes are pre drilled and counter sunk for bungs(sp). Slots are sawn and chiseled out. Later a router with a round-over bit is used to clean up the slot.
Here a test piece is installed to see how the screwing into the shear clamps will go. Because I did not want to epoxy the coaming down, I varnished the mating surfaces of the deck and coaming before screwing down.
This really is a three or fore hand job. Pushing in, holding down, aligning and screwing all at the same time. Thanks Kay.
The "barn door" rudder is constructed using 7/8" mahogany. For strength I installed a breadboard edge along the bottom and pegged it with oak 1/4" dowel. The mahogany boards are edge joined using biscuit and epoxy.
Transom is squared off and beveled. Center and shear lines are drawn on the transom for locating the pintles, gudgeons and retainer clips.
