April 2, Thursday. Film

Charulata, (1964), Snite Auditorium, 7:00 PM. Based on a
short story by

Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, it is directed by Satyajit Ray
(director

of acclaimed The Apu Trilogy and Lifetime Achievement Oscar recipient)
who

considered it his finest movie. Structured like a musical Rondo and set

the

story of a bored and neglected wife of a upper- class Bengali social

reformer and of her growing intimacy with her husband's cousin.

April 9, Thursday. Film

Khuda Gawah (1992). 141 DeBartolo Hall, 6:30 PM. This
film stars Amitabh

Bachchan and Sridevi, screen idols of India's Mumbai (Bombay) based
Hindi

film industry, the largest in the world. This adventure story,
featuring

revenge, bandits and beautiful scenery, represents the very popular
Hindi

action film genre which has a strong following not only in India, but
also

in places as diverse as Russia, South East Asia and the Middle East.

141 De Bartolo, 7:00 PM.

Lecture on "Indian Cinema" by Neepa Majumdar, Indiana University,

Bloomington, followed by film:

Bhaji on the Beach (1994).

Directed by Gurinder Chadha, this is a hilarious comedy-drama dealing
with

immigrant life far from home as well as the problems of racism and
sexism.

It tells the story of a busload of Indian women who set off from their

women's center in Birmingham, UK, to treat themselves to a day at the
beach

in Blackpool.
