Fellow Students, Instructors and Professional Cinephiles:
Hello again. My name is Seeta Gangadharan and I am the director of
programming for Stanford Film Society. I wrote you a few months ago to
present to you our idea of an independent short film series. We have since
moved forward on the project, narrowed our aims and now are soliciting
submissions for the upcoming series.
For the 1998 shorts' program, we are looking for films on three different
areas: police brutality, Native American culture and history, and
love-n'-humor. These three programs are part of a 7-week shorts film
series which will run next year beginning in February.
The Stanford Film Society plans to showcase films on police brutality in
recognition of ongoing struggle for police accountability and of recent
legal cases such as with Mumia Abu Jamal, the Philadelphia journalist
currently on death row accused of killing
a policeman. For the program on Native Americans, entitled "Native
Sounds," we are looking for films which address tribal mythology,
historical recollections, and current indigenous people's cultural and
political issues. Finally, for films on love and humor, we hope to show
movies which entertain the more humorous side of intimate relationships.
Most programs will be shown in conjunction with commentary by professors or
students.
If you have any films on the topic, please submit them by January 1, to the
above indicated address and to my attention. As we are a non-profit
student organization, we have a small budget for film screenings. We would
appreciate you donating your film gratis to allow us to continue operation.
If this is not possible, however, a discount on the permission rights for
the film would be welcomed. We can typically afford $2/minute for films
and will pay for mailing.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Seeta Peņa Gangadharan
