Dear Sir or Madam:

I am studying the action of juries in environmental law cases. I would like to recruit you as a research subject. Regardless of your own beliefs on environmental issues, your participation in this study would be very valuable in developing a better understanding of how jurors make decisions in such cases. You will be paid $2,000 after the completion of the study.

You have agreed to serve on a jury in Federal court during the week of Nov. 3rd, when an environmental case will be tried. I would like you to keep a trial journal (you can use a plain composition or lab book or a blue book) during the trail, in which you record the evidence as it is presented and make regular evaluations of your beliefs about where justice lies in the case.

After the case has been decided, I expect to receive a report neutral in tone, 5-6 pages long, in which you compare and contrast the strong and weak points of the case for the prosecution and for the defense. Please discuss both the technical evidence and the relevant laws/regulations, and comment on the way the evidence was presented in court.

Sincerely yours,

Marya Lieberman
