Numerous opportunities exist for students to become involved in research activities that promote inter-disciplinary solutions to current problems of national and international importance, and we welcome students with diverse backgrounds in science and engineering to apply.

Our success in this endeavor is strongly dependent on our ability to bring talented and motivated students into our program. We are therefore making every effort to provide attractive financial aid packages to all qualified graduate students. All admitted, full-time, degree-seeking graduate students are provided with full financial support that includes a competitive stipend and full tuition waiver. The Department is also making unique resources available for graduate students, such as a discretionary professional development fund (to purchase a laptop computer for example) and travel grants. Fellowships are available for members of underrepresented groups.

We are committed to offering students significant flexibility in pursuing a quality graduate program that fits their needs and help them achieve their goals. For example, an MS degree is not required for students to begin a PhD program and students can earn an MS degree while carrying out their PhD studies without the need to take additional courses or complete a separate thesis. For students planning to pursue an academic career, unique opportunities exist to take on significant teaching responsibilities within the Department.

Notre Dame is one of a handful of truly national universities with a diverse student body from across the United States and more than 100 different countries. We are dedicated as much to tradition as to scientific knowledge. Our relatively small size, personal approach to graduate education, and invigorating mixture of scholarship and technological innovation make Notre Dame an ideal setting to pursue a graduate degree.

The South Bend area enjoys a cost of living that is noticeably more affordable than the national average. In addition, there is an excellent supply of reasonably-priced, good-quality housing, as well as a wide selection of public and private schools and three major hospitals. The city offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities and facilities, and downtown Chicago, situated less than 100 miles from the University, offers additional attractions.
