Andrew Bartolini wins Best Technical Paper in the 2012 ASCE Great Lakes Conference with paper on Engineering Globalization and Ethics

Junior, Andrew Bartolini won the Technical Paper competition for his paper on Engineering Ethics and Globalization at the 2012 ASCE Great Lakes Regional Conference. Andrew was judged on his written paper and oral presentation. Notre Dame's student chapter of ASCE successfully competed in the remaining events: concrete canoe, steel bridge, surveying, environmental, geotech, and mystery design challenges. This year, the Great Lakes Regional Conference consisted of 17 student chapters of ASCE throughout the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Bradley University hosted this year's conference.

Jessica Beard has received an AAAS Mass Media Fellowship

She has been assigned to work at the Chicago Tribune for 10 weeks this summer. She was among 12 finalists chosen this year. The fellowship program is designed to enhance coverage of science-related issues in the media in order to improve public understanding and appreciation of science and technology more

Two of our Fall 2012 Graduate students Chuan Li and Maria Gibbs received 2012 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship

Selection was based on his/her outstanding abilities and accomplishments, as well as his/her potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the US science and engineering enterprise.
The stipend rate for 2012-13 is $30,000 per twelve-month Fellowship Year, given in increments of $2,500 per month. Fellowships are funded for a maximum of three years and may be used in any three, 12-month units, starting in Summer (June 1) or Fall (September 1) over a five-year period that begins in 2012 . more

Joshua Shrout named Associate Advisor to Science Translational Medicine journal

Assistant Professor Joshua Shrout was recently named a 2012 Associate Advisor to Science Translational Medicine, a sister journal of Science. http://stm.sciencemag.org/ The first of his monthly Editor's Choice articles appears in the March 21, 2012 issue. http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/4/126.toc The article profiles a recent discovery about Salmonella virulence by a Canadian research group at the University of British Columbia.

A new paper by researchers at the University of Notre Dame, led by Thomas E. Albrecht-Schmitt, professor of civil engineering and geological sciences and concurrent professor of chemistry and biochemistry, showcases Notre Dame Thorium Borate-1 (NDTB-1) as a crystalline compound that can be tailored to safely absorb radioactive ions from nuclear waste streams.more

Alexandros Taflanidis receives the IRIS 2012 Prize of Excellence by the Integrated European Industrial Risk Reduction System (IRIS) EU project, recognizing two of his publications this past year related to offshore energy conversion devices. The first one is titled “Analysis and design of offshore energy conversion devices under modeling uncertainties”, and it was presented in the OCEANS’11 Conference, and the second one is titled “Risk assessment and sensitivity analysis for offshore wind turbines”, and it was presented in the 21st International Offshore (Ocean) and Polar Engineering Conference.

The Notre Dame Chi Epsilon Student Chapter received a 2012 Susan C. Brown Outstanding Performance Award during the 2012 Conclave held in Los Angeles March 8-10, 2012

This award is established to recognize all active chapters that have diligently followed all administrative procedures between conclaves, which are held in even years. The Notre Dame Chapter has one this award at two consecutive conclaves (2010, 2012), signifying outstanding performance for four years since the 2008 Conclave at Stevens Institute in New Jersey. Chi Epsilon President Eric Herbert was on hand to receive the award along with faculty advisor, Dr. Tracy Kijewski-Correa.

Civil Engineering & Geological Sciences graduate students presented posters at the annual Graduate Student Union Research Symposium

Keshia Koehn received top honors in the Science category for her poster entitled, “An aerobic soil microbe's quest for Fe: investigations of source and strategy” by K. Koehn, C. Dehner, J. DuBois, and P. Maurice. Ann Dallman was awarded second place in the Engineering category for work on "Toward Sustainable Cities: Improving Meteorological and Air Quality Modeling" by A. Dallman, S. Di Sabatino, L. Leo, H.J.S. Fernando.  Dan McInnis presented results on “Modeling of non-Fickian transport in laboratory sand columns: The role of solute heterogeneity” in a poster by D.P. McInnis, D. Bolster, and P. A. Maurice. In “A Groundwater Project for K-12 Schools: Bringing Research into the Classroom" by C. Rodak, M. Walsh, and J. Gensic, Carolyn Rodak described the outreach work that she conducted with funding from the Notre Dame Extended Research Community. Ashley Thrall awarded Young Professional Scholarship

The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) has awarded Professor Ashley Thrall a Young Professional Scholarship to attend the Structures Congress in Chicago, Illinois in March 29-31, 2012.  This scholarship program has been instituted as a part of the SEI's commitment to the future of structural engineering.  It provides funds for practitioners and academics 35 years old and younger to attend the Structures Congress.

Clive Neal to Chair NASA Extended Mission Senior Review

Professor Clive R. Neal has been asked to Chair NASA's GRAIL Extended Mission Senior Review, which will take place over March 1-3, 2012, in Washington DC. The Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory or GRAIL mission has placed 2 spacecraft in orbit around the Moon to measure the lunar gravity field. Eric Herbert receives Moles Scholarship

Eric Herbert, class of 2012, was awarded the Moles Scholarship. The Moles provides scholarship to academically qualified and deserving students at the participating colleges and university. The Moles is a nationalwide organization of persons working in the heavy construction industry. Eric received $10,000 based on his academic sucess, hard work, and activities such as ND SEED and Big Beam.

Brittani Russell wins WTS Greater Chicago Leadership Legacy Scholarship award

Graduate student Brittani Russell won the WTS Greater Chicago Leadership Legacy Scholarship.  This award is given to an outstanding young woman pursuing graduate studies toward a career in transportation or a related field, and who demonstrates a specific interest in advancing transportation innovation in the international arena (see attached for more information).  This award is at the regional level and now her application will be passed on for consideration at the national level. more

Diogo Bolster elected to Board of Directors

Professor Diogo Bolster has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc.  (CUAHSI).  Notre Dame was a founding member of  CUAHSI and Patricia Maurice served on the BoD for several years. CUAHSI's membership (www.cuahsi.org) includes the top hydrologists from around the country and beyond as international membership has been growing. And, it keeps Notre Dame well networked into this important community that has a major voice in funding for the hydrologic sciences.

SOM Foundation awards winner of the 2011 SOM Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship

CHICAGO – The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) Foundation recently announced that the $10,000 SOM 2011 Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship has been awarded to Ashley Thrall, who in May received her PhD from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, where she has also received a Masters in Arts in 2009 and a Master of Science in Engineering in 2008. Working with Professors Sigrid Adriaenssens, Maria Garlock, and David Billington, her PhD research has focused on improving the sustainability of movable bridges by generating new forms that integrate the structural and mechanical systems. more
