OpenNebula Cloud at Notre Dame

Quick instructions for getting started can be found at: Getting Started

The Cooperative Computing Lab, in conjunction with the Notre Dame CRC, has created a private cloud computing infrastructure using OpenNebula's cloud computing toolkit. NOTE: Currently, the Notre Dame Private Cloud is in a working but limited state. We eagerly anticipate an expansion of capacity as we add more hardware and stabilize software support.

This cloud can be accessed via a web portal at: https://ndcloudfe.crc.nd.edu/

This cloud allows faculty and students to dynamically provision virtual machines for their own use. Uses for this include: projects with unusual software requirements, short term needs for extra computing power or student projects that require root access to a machine.

The Notre Dame cloud uses KVM as its hypervisor and is accessible to a subset of ND users. Notre Dame faculty who wish to use the Notre Dame cloud should contact psempoli@nd.edu . Please include in the email a brief description of what you plan to attempt to do with the cloud to: (1) aid in the long term planning of the cloud admin, (2) determine if other CRC resources might not be more appropriate for what you are trying to do and (3) allow the cloud admin to give useful advice or assistance.

Notre Dame students who wish to use the Notre Dame Cloud should ask their advisor or faculty instructor to send said email.

Note: All users of the Notre Dame Cloud should be advised that our cloud is still an early prototype. We apologize in advance for unplanned outages that might occur.

Additionally, all users should be advised that use of the Notre Dame cloud is for licit academic or research use only. Any illegal, immoral or disruptive use of these resources will not be tolerated. In particular, this includes, but is not limited to, any from of software copyright infringment by users of a virtual machine or any attempted use of cloud resources to disrupt other CRC or ND functions. Lastly, the cloud admin and the crc reserve the right to delete virtual machines and (if needed) ban users at their discretion.

Finally, any users with problems with, or suggestions for improvements to, the Notre Dame Cloud should contact Peter Sempolinski at psempoli@nd.edu.
