ACADEMIC CENTERS
CENTER FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES STUDIES

Background

The Notre Dame Center for Financial Services Studies was established in April of 1984 with the financial support of twenty-two commercial banks located in Indiana and Illinois. Since its inception, the purpose of the Center has been to assist the Mendoza College of Business in responding to the rapid evolution of the financial services industry in the state of Indiana and throughout the United States.

In order to achieve this goal, the Center has engaged in and sponsored a wide range of activities, including:

  • Encouragement and financial support of faculty research in the areas of financial institutions and markets;
  • Invitation of experts from academic, financial, and political sectors to the Notre Dame campus to address faculty, bankers, and students regarding recent developments in the financial services industry;
  • Conduct of workshops on topics of interest to managers of financial institutions such as bank marketing, credit analysis, and asset-and-liability management;
  • Preparation of students for employment in financial services firms by developing contact with banks in the form of classroom lectures, student research projects, and internships.
    Research Fellows

Since 1999, the Center has annually supported six faculty members of the Department of Finance and Business Economics, as Fellows, in recognition of their research contributions. The current fellows are:

Jeff Bergstrand, Associate Professor
Tom Cosimano, Professor
Mike Hemler, Associate Professor
Tim Loughran, Associate Professor
Rick Mendenhall, Associate Professor
Katherine Spiess, Associate Professor

Other Current Activities

The Center has engaged in several other activities that go toward its goal of meeting the needs of the financial services industry and the Notre Dame community:

  • Works with the undergraduate and MBA curriculums to insure coverage of topics important to the financial services sector.
  • Participated on the organizing committee of the "Wall Street Forum" to make sure that speakers and topics were of use to the attendees, especially those students unsure as to which part of the financial services sector they were most interested in for career opportunities.
  • Initiation of the Investment Banking and Asset Management Internship Program, developed to meet the needs of those MBA candidates with a strong interest in these two fields.
  • Development of funding and assistance to the undergraduate Career Center in putting together the "Wall Street Tour", whereby selected students get to visit Wall Street to help in their better understanding of potential careers in the investment banking industry.

Future Plans

Under discussion is the possibility of the Center putting on a two day markets conference to showcase the faculty expertise in this area, provide a forum for practitioners to discuss key current topics of interest, and to provide some general public relations information about the quality of the Mendoza College of Business. This would be an annual conference, probably to be held in the fall, and it is contemplated that the Center would seek corporate support for the meeting. More details will be provided as plans are developed.
