La Casa de Amistad offers our volunteers the opportunity to teach English as a Second Language courses to the local Hispanic community.

Teacher volunteers work with people of various proficiency levels and ages, giving both classroom instruction once or twice a week.

Our childcare program offers a comfortable environment in which to practice your language skills!
Program times are Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-8:00 pm

As a teacher, you would be working mostly with adults who live in the Hispanic neighborhoods of South Bend.

They are a dedicated and friendly group with English proficiencies ranging from Beginner to Advanced.

Our students greatly appreciate what we do, and it is out of respect for them that we require teachers to attend a minimum of one day every week

in order to provide consistency for the students, though you will likely find yourself wanting to come more often if your schedule permits.

Our childcare program allows volunteers to practice their Spanish language skills in a comfortable environment.

Childcare consists of overseeing/playing with our students’ children, who are typically ages 3-12 and a lot of fun to be around.

Childcare workers would be required to attend a minimum of one day every two weeks, although you may come as often as you’d like.

FAQ

Q: When are the classes and is transportation provided?

A:  Classes are from 5:45-8:15PM Tuesday and Thursday evenings (excluding breaks). Transportation from Library Circle and to

Main Circle is provided.

Q: I really want the opportunity to practice my Spanish!

A: We encourage English speaking at all times in the classroom, since that is what our students are trying to learn. However, there are other programs,

such as childcare, that are conducted largely in Spanish.

Q: What if I can't make it every week?

A: Childcare volunteers are allowed to set up a biweekly schedule, while teachers are required to come once a week.

Q: What if I can't make it/will be late?

A: Let us know! If it is more than 4 hours in advance you can email us at (cash@nd.edu)

Q: Will I get in trouble for being absent?

A: Not if you let us know in advance. Sometimes conflicts happen, but the program can't run effectively if we don't know who will show up. However,

different positions have varying degrees of consistency, so be realistic about your availability before signing up.

Q: What if I don't speak Spanish?

A: Since we are teaching English classes, we always use English unless absolutely necessary. Thus, teachers who speak no Spanish present
a challenge to our students and force them to use English, which is always a good thing.
