Memorial Hospital
The Memorial Hispanic Initiative provides comprehensive programs and services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for the Spanish-speaking population in South Bend. These can be described as falling into two main components: Medical Interpretation and Health Education and Community Services. Medical Interpretation is provided in Memorial Hospital, and Health Education and Community Services are provided at the Memorial Neighborhood Center at Marycrest on 2015 W. Western Avenue, South Bend.
Spanish Interpreters are available during all daytime hours (morning till midnight) and around the clock on week-ends. Certified Spanish Medical Interpreter Doulas are available around the clock for all Spanish-speaking women giving birth who desire their presence.
The Neighborhood Center at Marycrest is already home to a variety of services such as WIC, BABE, Healthy Families for a Healthier West Side, and Hoosier Healthwise. Two courses are offered regularly, “Medical Interpreters Course” and “Diabetes Type II Education and Support”. The Center is also working at providing exercise classes with Latino music, teen mentoring and after school activities and women’s health groups.
