Asian Summer Language Grant Program

The Center for Asian Studies is committed to helping students pursue their specific academic interests. Therefore, each year the Asian Summer Language Grant Program offers financial support for students who wish to study an Asian language not currently offered at Notre Dame during their summer break. By offering assistance, the Center for Asian Studies continues in its dedication to promote the study of Asia at Notre Dame.

Applications now being accepted!

Deadline for application is Friday, March 28, 2008!

The Center for Asian Studies is sponsoring a competition for continuing undergraduates and graduate students who wish to study an Asian language not currently offered at Notre Dame. At present, this means that students may not apply to study Mandarin Chinese or Japanese. It is expected that such study will contribute to the student’s further education at Notre Dame. In most cases, language classes taken elsewhere will be counted for academic credit at Notre Dame.

This grant is meant to defray program costs only. Students should not expect this grant to cover more than a small fraction of their total costs, and are encouraged to take an active role in seeking other sources of funding. Students are expected to enter an accredited summer program. Classes that are primarily cultural, as opposed to language study, are not funded. As part of their application, first year students who have not officially declared a college will be asked to indicate which college they intend to enter. The competition is NOT open to seniors or graduate students completing their degress.

The program selected can be either in the United States or a foreign country. It is the student's responsibility upon returning to make sure their grade appears on their transcript. Your college advisor can assist you with this.

Applications are also available from the Center for Asian Studies (210 O’Shaughnessy Hall); or you may request one by mail by calling 1-0487.

Application Procedures

A complete application consists of the following:

1. A cover sheet with personal information and a summary of why such a program of study will be helpful to your intellectual development (Cover Page form provided).

2. A budget for anticipated expenses incurred during the period of the grant, including travel, food and lodging, and other expenses (Budget form provided).

3. A statement of why this program of study would be helpful to you. This should include your previous language study experience, if any, why you feel developing skills in this language will be important, precisely what the program is that you are applying to (a brochure or print-out from the web may be helpful in this), how this fits into your academic program here at Notre Dame and into your future goals, and any other information you feel will be helpful to the committee evaluating these applications. This should be no more than two pages, double-spaced with normal margins and type.

4. One letter of recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with your program of studies here at the University of Notre Dame. The letter should be submitted in a sealed, signed envelope with the application materials, or sent directly to the Center for Asian Studies. A Faculty Reference form is provided that should be given to the person writing the reference. We will also accept e-mails from the faculty addressed to cas@nd.edu.

5. Print the online Adobe Reader application by clicking on the printer icon at the top of the Adobe Reader window. Once printed, you will need to sign and date your complete application, including all documentation, and submit it to the Center for Asian Studies at 210 O'Shaughnessy Hall.

6. Deadline: A complete application, including all documentation, must be received by Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Center for Asian Studies (210 O'Shaughnessy Hall). Decisions will be communicated by e-mail.
