After the Main Building burned down in 1879, it was reconstructed in a T-formation. The western wing was named Carroll Hall, housed only freshmen, and covered parts of four floors. The bathroom was located on the bottom. Each student had a wash bowl and medicine cabinet. The Carroll Study Hall took up the entire west wing. It contained about 70 desks and was considered the hangout for Carroll residents. The exact time the original building closed is unknown, but an old issue of Scholastic says it occured during 1943.
