ME 470: Senior Design Project
This is a senior level requirement for all students in the Mechanical Engineering curriculum. This site contains information on this course and links to student project sites.
Information on this course is for the Spring 1999 offering. Last updated
April 26, 1999.
The course is presented as a team-based, product-focused design-build exercise. The students are organized into small design build teams and each team is responsible for the concept definition, design, documentation, fabrication and testing of a specific mechanical system. Information on the project and progress of the student groups will be provided as the course progresses. Comments regarding this course are encouraged and can be directed via email to the instructors listed below.
Each design team was responsible for developing a web page to present their efforts. These sites are deleted after the end of the semester so they are
no longer available but the following highlights some of the activities
from this semester-long project.
The following links provide photos of the members of the design groups.
Each design group has developed an autonomous control simulation model to assist
with the development of the control system for their product.
The control systems were demonstrated by each group on March 18 and each
performed quite well. A complete index, load, seal and distribute cycke
was performed by each system.
The following show these simple demonstration models.

Group B: Bolts and Nuts

Group C: Endless Migrana

Group D: Out of the Box
The Critical Design Review took place on Thursday, April 1, 1999. The
industry review team was composed of the following:
- Pamela Williamson, Daimler Chrysler
- Bryan Beck, AlliedSignal
- Brain Conrady, Ford
- Skip Poole, Smurfit-Stone Container
- Chris Wadium, Smurfit-Stone Container
- Richard Greenwell, Boeing
- Gordon Gibson, Lockheed-Martin
The support and contributions of these individuals and organizations to
this project is greatly appreciated. The following are some "underexposed
photos" higlighting the CDR presentations.

Group B: Bolts and Nuts
Group C: Endless Migrana
Group D: Out of the Box
Part fabrication and product assembly began after the CDR.
The following photos highlight some of the activities during
this part of the product development process.
The product demonstration took place
on Friday evening, April 23, 1999 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 356 Fitzpatrick
Hall of Engineering. The following highlight some of the products
and the demonstration.
