ME/AE 446: Finite Element Methods in Structural Analysis
Portfolio Project #3 - Plane Stress/Plane Strain Application
Due Nov. 9, 1995
As with the previous portfolio projects, the specific application for this study will be selected by the student. The goal of the project is to develop experience in problem formulation, execution and documentation of a case study in structural analysis. For this problem the "structure" should be a solid in which can be modeled using either plane stress or plane strain 2-D elements. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the finite element mesh and the appropriate modeling of the the boundary conditions and applied loads. This application study can use any (or all) of the FEM analysis codes available for this class of probems (Rectangles, Triangles or ALGOR).
The documentation must include:
- Problem Description
- detail the purpose of the "structure" or component
- any special considerations associated with the structure which is being modeled and analyzed
- FEM formulation - describe with adequate detail the
- loading conditions
- boundary conditions
- geometry
- material properties
- reference system
- FEM mesh details and justification
- Numerical Results
- concise presentation of the results of the analysis
- Validation of Numerical Results
- discussion and presentation of methods used to evaluate and validate the results
- evaluation of the suitability of the FEM model and analysis results
Format for this presentation is left to the student's discretion but it should be such that someone else could duplicate or verify all results. The complete report is limited to 8 (eight) pages, this includes all details, discussion and results.
