My interests include: conflict, (political) culture, civil society, cognition, democracy, fields, gender, globalization, institutions, languages, micromobilization, networks, peace research, political participation, publics, regimes, social change, social movements, and violence.

My dissertation will trace global and domestic institutional and other cultural and political influences on the development of civil societies, publics, and democratic political cultures in communist Eastern Europe.

In a second major project, I investigate the role of culture and cognition in micromobilization processes leading to participation in political violence and in protest. It is based on survey data from Sub-Saharan Africa.

I’m also collaborating with Christian Davenport on creating a positive peace scale.
