Tutors

The tutorial program in the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes is designed to assist student-athletes in two ways. First, the program seeks to help student-athletes gain a better understanding of the courses in which they are currently enrolled. To this end, the Tutor Coordinator seeks out the most qualified individuals to tutor these specific courses, typically by soliciting recommendations from professors. To meet the diverse requests of student-athletes, the program employs tutors from a wide variety of academic disciplines, encompassing every college and almost every major at the university. Second, the tutorial program attempts to develop in the student-athlete the skills required to become an independent learner.
Beyond the course-specific instruction, the tutor demonstrates by example the necessary habits to be successful in his or her academic discipline. The main goal of the program is to help the student-athlete become academically self-sufficient.

At the beginning of each semester all tutors must attend a training and orientation session with the Tutor Coordinator. Each tutor only needs to attend one of these sessions. For the Fall 2006 Semester, these sessions will be held in Room 109 of the Coleman-Morse Center at the following times:

  TBD

At these orientation sessions the Tutor Coordinator will cover many of the rules, regulations, and procedures involved with tutoring. Many of these can be found in the Tutor Manual. In addition, students who have not previously held a paid position on campus will need to fill out employment paperwork. These individuals should bring with them one of the following to prove eligibility for employment in the United States:

1. A passport
2. A driver’s license and social security card
3. A driver’s license and birth certificate

International students should ask the Tutor Coordinator about the necessary employment paperwork. The Student Employment Office has all of the employment paperwork on its website.

If you are unable to make any of the scheduled meetings, you must contact the Tutor Coordinator to arrange another time to go through the training process. You can contact the Tutor Coordinator, Chad Faber, at (574) 631-9788 or email assa@nd.edu.
