Citing Sources
Anytime you use information that you obtained through research, you must mention the source in the form of a citation. This is important because work that is not cited does not give credit to the appropriate person. It appears to be your thoughts and/or ideas when in actuality they came from someone else. Citing the information used in your paper also allows others reading your paper to immediately find the source.
There are very specific formats to be used when citing sources. The two most common styles are MLA and APA, both of which can be accessed online. In addition, most English Handbooks give examples of proper citations for any source. Copies of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) are available for student use in the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes.
Failure to properly cite your sources can lead to an accusation of plagiarism, which is discussed under Academic Fraud.
