Research Associate Professor &
Concurrent Associate Professor

I’m an isotope geochemist and over the past 20 years have applied my research expertise and knowledge of various isotope systems (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os, Pb-Pb, U-Pb) to a wide variety of Earth Sciences-related disciplines; these include: long-range tracing of atmospheric pollution, identifying migration patterns of ancient civilizations, geochronological investigations of igneous rocks and biogenic materials, and characterizing the chemical and isotopic nature of Earth’s upper mantle. My complete publications list can be accessed below.
My group’s current research endeavors and their biographical sketches are listed below. In the group picture above we have (from left to right): Mary Kate Fidler (undergraduate research assistant), Wei Chen (PhD student), Antonio Simonetti, Dr. Jeremy Bellucci (postdoctoral researcher), Allan Jones (undergraduate research assistant), and Elizabeth Koeman (PhD student).

RESEARCH
My ICP-MS-based research interests and publications are varied and these cover many disciplines within the Earth Sciences, and also include recent collaborations with anthropologists and medical doctors. In recent years, I've also been involved with the development of innovative laser ablation-ICP-MS techniques, such as the recent chapter contribution in the Mineralogical Association of Canada-sponsored short course entitled, "Laser Ablation ICP-MS in the Earth Sciences: Current Practices and Outstanding Issues", held at the 2008 V.M. Goldschmidt Conference in Vancouver, Canada.

However, my research 'passion' remains deeply rooted with investigating the chemical nature of subcontinental mantle through the isotopic and chemical investigations of alkaline igneous rocks, such as carbonatites, nephelinites, and kimberlites. I recently accepted an invitation as a guest editor for a special issue of the journal Mineralogy and Petrology dealing with flood basaltic volcanism and associated alkaline magmatism dedicated to Keith Bell. Special issue is now available as March 2010 volume.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GRADUATE WORK, PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR DETAILS
UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE STUDENTS
| Wei Chen (University of Notre Dame) - Wei began her PhD graduate research work in August 2010. The main objective of Wei's PhD research work is to conduct a first-time, multi-faceted approach involving in-situ chemical (major and trace element) and isotopic (C, O, Sr, Nd, Pb) characterization of the dominant minerals (apatite, calcite) at the micron scale in carbonatites and associated alkaline Si-undersaturated rocks from the Oka carbonatite complex using a vast array of microanalytical techniques. She will also conduct an extensive U-Pb dating investigation of the Oka complex via the analysis of several accessory minerals (e.g., apatite and perovskite) present within the alkaline rocks at Oka. |
![]() |
Elizabeth Koeman (University of Notre Dame) - Elizabeth began her PhD thesis work in the summer of 2011 and will focus on method development required for the separation of different mineral and glass phases from trinitite, and the in-situ chemical and isotopic analysis of these materials. Her research work will help create a substantial database of chemical and isotopic analyses for trinitite material from the Trinity explosion, which will be of scholarly interest since it will help to understand the extreme conditions, and their evolution in a nuclear blast. Elizabeth's work will also help establish a scientific workforce with a knowledge in the field of nuclear forensics. |
![]() |
Frederico Vilvalva (Departamento de Mineralogia e Geotectônica do Instituto de Geociências da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil) - Frederico was a visiting PhD student in our department between February and August 2011. Frederico's PhD research focuses primarily on the U-Pb, Lu-Hf, Pb-Pb, and Sr isotopic investigation of granites from the Morro Redondo Complex, Brazil, along with some key samples from other occurrences within the Graciosa A-type Province for comparative purposes. |
| Nick Civetta, B.S. Civil Engineering (University of Notre Dame) - Nick earned his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in the spring (2011). Despite his main love of engineering, he nonetheless expressed a wish to conduct research in our ICP-MS facility. He worked as a research assistant in the ICP-MS facilty between Sept. 2009 and May 2011. He also conducted research work on the in-situ U-Pb dating and chemical characterization of zircon megacrysts from South African kimberlite deposits by laser ablation-ICP-MS analysis. Nick is currently conducting graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. |
| Mary Kate Fidler, BSc Environmental Geosciences (University of Notre Dame) - Mary Kate is currently a senior and has been working in the ICP-MS facility as an undergraduate research assistant for the past couple of years. During the summer of 2011, she begun her research work on several samples of trinitite, which includes their petrographic and mineralogic characterization, and this will be followed by SEM, TEM and in-situ laser ablation analyses. |
![]() |
Allan Jones, BSc Environmental Geosciences (University of Notre Dame) - Allan is currently a senior and working as an undergraduate research assistant in the ICP-MS facility. In the Spring 2011 semester, he shall begin an undergraduate research thesis focused on investigating the Sr and Pb isotopic nature and trace element signatures of feldspar phenocrysts at high spatial resolution within phonolitic lavas associated with several alkaline complexes of the Barmer area, west-central India. |
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWS
![]() |
Jeremy J. Bellucci, PhD (University of Maryland) - Jeremy specializes in micron-scale isotopic systematics. His research interests are in understanding the spatially resolved chemical and isotopic chemistry of Earth materials. His current project is to quantify the variability in composition of a mineral called trinitite for the purpose of establishing a database for nuclear forensics and furthering the understanding of nuclear explosion chemistry. |
MITERAC - ICP-MS FACILITY
Clive Neal and I, co-PIs on a NSF-MRI equipment grant, have successfully received funding for the establishment of MITERAC, a new laboratory facility that shall expand the research endeavors of 18 researchers from 6 universities in Indiana and Michigan. This will be accomplished via the acquisition of a new multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (Nu Plasma II from Nu Instruments), a HR-ICP-MS (AttoM from Nu Instruments), a NWR193 nm laser ablation (ESI-New Wave Research) and a microdrilling system. These will be combined with the existing high resolution Element 2 ICP-MS, and UP213 nm laser ablation unit. The new laboratory facilities and instrumentation are expected to be operational in June 2011.
