Learning Resource Center (LRC)

Programs for Chemistry Courses

Spring 2003

The LRC is part of the First Year of Studies. Among the many services it provides to first-year students are the Tutoring Program, the Collaborative Learning Program, and a series of Workshops. The purpose of these programs is to assist students with their proficiency in Chemistry.

Tutoring Program. Tutoring is available to students whose success in a first-year course requires assistance beyond that which is provided by the course instructors or staff. Tutoring sessions for small groups of students are offered in Chem 102, 114, 116, 118 and 126. These sessions meet once weekly for two (2) hours and begin Wednesday, January 22, 2003.

Collaborative Learning (CL). Small numbers of students (4-6) are grouped by course and section, and work on chemistry homework. In the process of talking with each other and sharing their ideas about the work, they achieve a better knowledge and understanding of chemistry and its applications. Sometimes groups share their ideas with other groups that are working on the same problems. In this way, all students gain valuable ideas from others. Facilitators, upper-class students who have successfully completed the course, are available to encourage problem-solving and collaboration between group members and to help when no one in the group can answer a question. CL begins Wednesday, January 22, 2003 with the following schedule:

Chem 114/116/118 Monday AND Wednesday 8:30 - 10:00 PM in Coleman Morse 228

Chem 114/116/118 Tuesday 6:30 - 8:30 PM in Coleman Morse 242

Workshops. Workshops are help sessions that do not require regular attendance. They begin Sunday, January 26, 2003 with the following schedule:

Chem 114 Sunday 6:30 - 8:30 PM in DeBartolo 214

Chem 116/118 Sunday 6:30 - 8:30 PM in DeBartolo 215

Sign-up Instructions. To sign up, please contact Nahid Erfan, Director of the LRC (631-7904; Nahid.A.Erfan.1@nd.edu).

Attendance Policy. Students are expected to attend all tutoring or collaborative learning sessions. If you are unable to attend a session, call the LRC at 631-5294 to obtain an excused absence. Two unexcused absences may result in dismissal, and readmission cannot be guaranteed.
