Question: What is an SMP cadet?

Answer:  An SMP Cadet or “Simultaneous Membership Program” cadet is a cadet that basically has two roles one as an Army ROTC cadet and the other as a member of the National Guard or Army Reserve.

Question: What does an SMP Cadet do that is different?

Answer: Nothing really, it’s business as usual except that one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer you train with a National Guard or Army Reserve unit.

Question: Does the Army National Guard and Army Reserve have the same Officer Branches as Active Duty?

Answer: Yes! The Army National Guard and Army Reserve have the same Officer branches as Active duty.

Question: If I am on an Active Duty Scholarship can I switch to a National Guard or Army Reserve Scholarship?

Answer: Yes! The only time you cannot switch from Active Duty to Army National Guard or Army Reserve is if you are on an Active Duty Nursing Scholarship.

Answer: There are TWO types of Army National Guard and Army Reserve Scholarships.

3yr Dedicated Army National Guard Scholarship

This Scholarship can be used as a 3, 2, or 1yr.

Must be an SMP Participant

Will cover 100% of tuition OR room and board*(Does not include fees)

Cannot use with Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill

ONLY for National Guard

Service obligation of 8 YEARS IN THE Army NATIONAL GUARD after commission.

2yr Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship Option

This Scholarship can be used as a 2 or 1 yr.

Must be and SMP Participant.

Will cover 100% tuition OR room and board*(Does not include fees)

Can use ANY GI BILL benefits.

For National Guard and Reserve Duty.

Service obligation of 8 YEARS IN THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD OR ARMY RESERVE (with option to take last TWO years in the Inactive Ready Reserve but are subject to recall by Active, ARNG, or Army Reserve)

Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Non-Scholarship Option.

 Guarantees ARNG service

Requires drilling in an ARNG unit as a SMP cadet

Must serve 8 years as an officer in the National Guard or Army Reserve*(with option to take last TWO years in the Inactive Ready Reserve but are subject to recall by Active, ARNG, or Army Reserve)

May qualify for $10,000 Accessions Bonus

Receive monthly ROTC stipend

No scholarship money (no tuition or R&B)

 

Question: What are the qualifications for the Scholarships?

Answer:

  1. US Citizen; no dual citizenship 
  2. Under 31 years for entire commissioning year
  3. 2.5 cumulative GPA (minimum)
  4. Academic sophomore, 32 credit hrs(minimum)
  5. Pass APFT; meet height/weight standards
  6. Medically qualified
  7. Full-time student status
  8. May need waivers for dependants and civil convictions
  9. See ROTC battalion for complete qualifications
