Tribology Laboratory

The Tribology Laboratory is co-directed by Timothy C. Ovaert and Steven R. Schmid and located in 995 square feet of space. Major equipment includes a CETR UMT-1 universal tribology test rig; a high-speed (100 mm/s) micro-scratch/micro-indent tester with optical photomicroscopy capabilities; a high-speed 1.5 kW three-pin-on-disk tester with 200ºC and friction sensing capabilities; a low-speed reciprocating pin-on-flat tester with 200ºC and friction sensing capabilities; Nikon, Olympus, and Unitron (toolmaker) microscopes; an ultrasonic cleaner; chemical fume hood; hot plate; 300 mm x 300 mm Lapmaster polishing plate; BYK Gardner ASTM gloss meter; and two precision (0.01 mg sensitivity) analytical balances for weight loss measurements.
