2003 Spring/Summer/Fall

Engineering graduate students and undergraduate interns whose research falls under the broad category of bioengineering, especially in biomaterials and/or biomechanics, currently participate in this meeting. Participating students are expected to present at this meeting once per semester. The spring and fall BIO Research Seminar includes original research presentations and the summer BIO Journal Club includes critical reviews.

"JOURNAL CLUB" EXPECTATIONS:
The "Journal Club" emphasis will be on scholarly discussion and critical thinking. Speakers should select a recent journal article related to "bioengineering," and preferably biomaterials and/or biomechanics. Speakers must email a pdf file (original or scanned copy) of their chosen journal article to Weimin Yue (Weimin.Yue.2@nd.edu) by noon the friday before their scheduled time. The paper will then be available on this website (click on speakers name) so that participants may view the paper before the meeting. Speakers will present important aspects of the paper and should be prepared to answer questions related to relevant background information. Participating students should come prepared to discuss the chosen journal article. The atmosphere will be very informal. Bring your lunch.

"JOURNAL CLUB" GOALS:
To foster a dynamic, positively-reinforced atmosphere of research activity amongst participating students, which includes the following:

a) participation in scholarly discussions
b) development of critical thinking skills
c) keeping current on literature related to your research
d) stimulation of further intellectual discussion, questions, and fortuitous ideas outside the meeting
e) a community of sorts for those engaged in related research projects
