This page gives
a partial list of those courses that can be used to satisfy the Department's
and University's general education requirements. Most of these courses are offered
by the College of Arts and Letters.
Courses other than those indicated here may be accepted to satisfy a
specific requirement. Students must petition the Dean of the College of Engineering,
in writing, and receive approval, before taking such a course.
Students completing the degree requirements must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of general education courses.
Physical Education-zero credit hours (two courses) required, These courses are taken in the Freshman year.
Special Course in Freshman Year
University Seminar-three credit hours (one course) required. This course can be from a variety of liberal arts disciplines but which must carry the designation University Seminar 180. Courses with the University Seminar designation can simultaneously satisfy a University requirement in either history, literature, fine arts, social science, philosophy, or theology.
Composition and Literature-three credit hours (one course) required, FYC 13100
Theology- six credit hours (two courses) required. The first course is either THEO 10001 or THEO 20001. The second is normally at the 20000 level, but students with adequate preparation may fulfill the requirement at the 30000 or 40000 level.
Philosophy- six credit hours (two courses) required. The first course is an introduction to philosophy. The second is usually at the 20000 level. In special cases, students can fulfill the second requirement with a higher level course. In general, the philosophy requirement must be completed at Notre Dame.
History-three credit hours (one course) required. Any course offered by the History Department. Advanced placement credits in World History or American History will satisfy this requirement.
Social Science-three credit hours (one course) required. from any of the following disciplines
Anthropology- Any course offered by the Department of Anthropology
Economics
Economics 10015-Introduction to Economics
Economics 20015-Introduction to Economics
Economics 30010-Intermediate Economic Theory-Micro
Economics 30020-Intermediate Economic Theory-Macro
Note: Economics 30330, Statistics for Economics does not satisfy the Social Science requirement.
Government and International Studies-Any course offered by the Department of Government and International Studies
Psychology-
Courses at the 10000 and 20000 levels
NOTE: Courses in experimental psychology (e.g. 30010/30160), practicum courses, and computer applications (e.g. 20671, 25270) do not satisfy the social science requirement.
Sociology- Any course offered by the Department of Sociology except SOC 30902, Methods of Research, and SOC 30903, Statistics for Professionals.
Fine Arts or Literature-three credit hours (one course) required
English-Literature courses offered by the Department of English; ENGL 20111-20071, ENGL 40012-40071. (Academic Council, 2-25-92).
Classical and Oriental Literatures
German and Russian Literatures
Romance Literatures
Literature courses, whether taught in the language of composition or in translation. Courses which satisfy a literature requirement will normally be taught at the 30000 level or higher.
Art, Art History and Design-Art Studio (ARST), Art History (ARHI) or Design (DESN) offered in the Art, Art History, and Design Department. (Academic Council, 2-25-92).
Film, Television and Theatre- Any course offered by the Department of Film, Television and Theatre, excluding dance instruction and internship or practicum courses.
Music- Any course offered by the Department of Music (MUS 10190-20002; 10191-30003). Note: Music Organizations and Applied Music Instruction, regardless of aggregate credits accumulated, will not satisfy the University requirement for literature or fine arts.
NOTE: ROTC students
Mechanical Engineering Program-Students, who complete an ROTC program, may substitute 3 credit hours of ROTC classes for either the History or the Social Science Requirement, and 3 credit hours of ROTC classes for a Technical Elective.
Aerospace Engineering Program- Students, who complete an ROTC program, may substitute 3 credit hours of ROTC classes for either the History or the Social Science requirement, and 3 credit hours of ROTC classes to satisfy the Professional Development elective.
