Subject: Fall elective: Engineering Analysis

To: AME juniors and sophomores
From: Mihir Sen

AME 57104 Engineering Analysis will be offered as an elective in the fall, As the instructor I would like to explain what the course is about, especially since it will be taught for the first time (and may not be taught again, if there is no interest this time).

The objective of the course is to give a small number of students who are interested in graduate education (immediately or in the future) a broad introduction to some of the analytical and numerical tools that are used in modern engineering. In addition, there will be strong emphasis on the relation between mathematics and engineering; each of the topics will be applied to some aspect of aerospace and mechanical engineering. Some of the math and the engineering you have probably seen, maybe separately, but some may be new to you.

Currently, we have courses that are open to undergraduates that provide a survey of beginning graduate-level mathematics, but the enrollment of undergraduates in those courses has typically been very small. There is no difficulty with the level, but the workload is high. This course will be at the beginning graduate level in quality but undergraduate in the quantity of assignments.

In talking to high-schoolers I hear frequently that they want to come to engineering because of their interest in science amd math. I hope that some of you still have an interest in science and math, and will consider this course as an elective for the fall semester. Further details of the course are in the following Website.
