Arts and Letters

Arts & Letters Preprofessional Program (ALP2)

The Preprofessional curriculum is designed to assist arts, humanities and social science students with the prerequisites necessary to gain admission into medical, dental and other health professions graduate schools. This program demands at least 49 hours of science in conjunction with over 70 hours of arts and letters coursework. Upon completion of this program, students will earn a supplementary major in the College of Arts and Letters. ALP2 requires 40 hours of core science coursework followed by 9 hrs. of upper level science electives. With careful planning, students can select science electives to meet the requirements for any of the health professions graduate schools such as medical school, dental school, veterinary school, physical therapy, physician assistant, nursing or optometry school to name a few.

Medical schools often seek applicants with a broad, liberal arts education who have developed the interpersonal skills necessary for a successful career in medicine. The ALP2 program achieves these goals naturally by the synergy of both arts and science coursework.

In the fall of 2006, the College of Science introduced a new four-semester Chemistry sequence. Freshman start with General Chemistry in the fall then move to Organic Chemistry in the spring. Sophomores pick up the second semester of Organic Chemistry in the fall and finish off with an advanced Chemistry class in the spring. Not all Chemistry classes will be offered in the summer so careful planning is essential if students start the sequence late, need to drop a class or want to study abroad.

ALP2 Requirements (49 hours):

Calculus A & B (8 credits)MATH 10350 & 10360
General Biology A & B (8 credits)BIOS 20201 & Lab
BIOS 20202 & Lab
Chemistry (16 credits)CHEM 10171 & Lab
CHEM 10172 & Lab
CHEM 20273 & Lab
CHEM 20274 & Lab
Physics I & II (8 credits)PHYS 30210 & Lab
PHYS 30220 & Lab
3 Upper Level Natural Science Electives at the 300 or 400 level. No labs required (9 hours)

Students must take three upper level science electives (nine hours) in order to complete the ALP2 major. The following electives are recommended for students applying to medical or dental school: Vertebrate Physiology (BIOS 30344), Biochemistry (CHEM 40420), Cell Biology (BIOS 30341), Embryology (BIOS 30301), Microbiology (BIOS 30401). Biochemistry and Vertebrate Physiology are strongly recommended. CHEM 20204 (Environmental Chemistry) and Physics 20140 (Astronomy) do NOT count towards the three science electives. It is the responsibility of the student to research the prerequisites for the graduate school of his/her choice.
