The Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory studies engineering and geophysical processes at the coastal margins. These include wave transformation and effects, storm surge and damage, and morphological development in the nearshore. Approaches are both experimental and computational, ranging from deployment of wave and surge gauges prior to hurricanes to simulation of nearshore hydrodynamics using high resolution coupled wave/surge models. Recent work has encompassed post-storm evaluations of wave and surge damage at many coastal locations.

Students working in this lab for their graduate level research have gone on to careers in engineering consulting, academia, and government. Undergraduate students working in this lab have gone on to graduate school, or to careers in industry. There is presently a good demand for trained coastal engineers, with not enough students graduating to fill all positions.
