Guisinger pecializes in international relations theory, crisis
diplomacy, and international political economy. Her dissertation,
“Understanding Cross-Country Patterns in Trade Liberalization,” spans
comparative political economy and international relations to explore
what determines a country's trade policy choices. Focusing on
previously neglected diffusion processes, she argues that countries'
trade protection policies are interdependent and thus highly dependent
on the policies of peers as well as trading partners. In a similar
manner, she is currently working on a series of papers examining both
domestic and international determinants of capital controls.
From her other research agenda concerning diplomacy, a recent paper
with co-author Alastair Smith, “Honest Threats: The Interaction of
Reputation and Political Institutions in International Crises,” was
published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution. (A.B., Harvard
University , 1994; M.A., Yale University ; Ph.D., Yale University, 2005)
