LIBRARY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
September 26, 2000

Present: Jennifer Younger, Jo Bessler, Gay Dannelly, Theresa Casad, Dan Marmion, Kathy Blackstead

DM reported that Laura Sill had given birth to a baby boy, Andrew William Sill, on September 26. Marc Truitt attended the International Consortium of Aleph Users meeting in Berlin. The Library Systems Department, in conjunction with the Aleph Working Group, has successfully arrived at a method of testing the constant barrage of “Rep changes” to the Aleph system in a manner that does not take the hours and hours of staff time that was previously required, yet assures that adequate testing is done.

JB reported that Carl Sebastian Ladwig was born September 24. She reported on a Human Resources conference she and Sherry Veith attended that was informative, and at which she delivered a paper on rewarding employees. An issue that arose at a recent LAM meeting involved commercial delivery carriers that drop packages off with the monitors, even though the packages often are not for the library.

TC reported that Ross Ferguson would begin his employment as Supervisor of Building Services on October 2, thus overlapping with Dave Thornton a couple of weeks. She noted also that Eileen and Melodie were attending an American Management Association conference.

GD put forth a suggestion from Laura Bayard that we explore having ARL workshops onsite for supervisors and for coping with change. It was agreed that JB would work with Sherry and the Training and Development Committee to explore possibilities and then report back to LEC. GD and Carole Richter are comparing Web of Science and Current Contents to see whether we can just subscribe to one of them. Carole and Thurston will meet with the science faculty as well. The BNA Table of Contents data is being considered, but may require a special loader program to be written.

Next was a discussion of the issue of annual reviews. JY will send memos to alert people that they can add to their files supporting documentation for reappointment and promotion. It was pointed out that the time frame for annual reviews is the Fall, while that for merit recommendation is the Spring, and that although there is no direct relationship between the two, the former obviously will have some impact on the latter. The purpose of the current discussions is to determine what it is we want the annual reviews to do and then communicate that to the faculty. It was also noted that CAP has created a model for doing CVs that should assist the faculty members in doing their own. At the Oct. 4 LEC meeting we will consider the objectives of the annual review process.

With KB present, we discussed and revised a draft of procedures for processing new endowments.

TC discussed the June Fund Accountabilities Report.
