LEC Faculty Annual Review Evaluation Factors
Preliminary Outline
LEC 10/09/00; revised 10/17/00

The purpose is to develop a shared understanding throughout the library faculty of factors important to LEC in conducting annual reviews and in anticipating awards for merit.
These are guidelines developed by LEC prior to the fall 2000 annual reviews. We anticipate further discussion and revision when shared more broadly among the library faculty.

In looking at these criteria, which were developed by the library faculty and are identified in the Library Faculty Manual, we make several observations about the relative emphasis placed on each, the ebb and flow of individual's work over time, and the connected nature of these criteria. The Library Faculty Manual (III.D.2.) States that professional service is the main concern and basis for all reappointments and promotions. It is the area of responsibility on which faculty appropriately spend the greatest amount of time and effort and where your accomplishments will be most numerous.

We also point to the connected nature of these criteria which do not exist independently. There is a synergy derived from the relationships. Questions that arise in professional service often drive activities in other areas. Those accomplishments in turn inform professional service and can be expected to lead to enhanced library services or operations.

Last, the Library Faculty Manual (Section III.D.2) also states that all criteria are applied to all faculty for reappointment and promotion. It also identifies the levels of achievement needed for promotion. Annual reviews inform and anticipate reappointment and promotion considerations. We recognize the ebb and flow in individual responsibilities and goals, which also reflect library priorities and needs, over time, and within a single year we do not necessarily expect to see achievements or activity in all of the criteria. Even over multiple years, we recognize there will be diverse records of achievement in scholarship, growth in the profession and library and community service. What is most important to us is that library faculty identify and participate in scholarship, growth in the profession, and/or library and community service in ways that will benefit their professional service, and that your interest in improving library services and collections will lead to informative activities in scholarship, growth in the profession, and/or library and community service.
