(USSR, Mongolia, and France, 1991)

Nikita Mikhalkov's film is set in the vast rolling steppes of inner Mongolia. Gombo, a young Mongolian shepherd, and his family lead a simple, traditional existence until their lives are interrupted by Sergei, a Soviet-Russian truck driver. Sergei alters the family's traditional perspective when he takes Gombo on a revealing and hilarious trek into the city. Sergei, in turn, comes to realize that both he and the society he represents have been relegated to the cultural sidelines.
