"Sideburns"

(USSR, 1990)

Yuri Mamin's bitter, dark satire about the rise of fascism and reactionary elements in Russia toward the end of the Soviet period concerns the fictional Pushkin Club, a right-wing movement with the self-proclaimed mission of orchestrating "a social cleaning service" and eliminating "the scum of Western influence." The film's goal was "to make people laugh at reality before they died of horror," according to Mamin.
