Post-Soviet Russian Cinema

"Adam’s Rib"

(USSR, 1990)

A contemporary Russian social comedy reminiscent of Chekhov. Set in a crowded flat, the great Irina Churikova plays the stressed-out post-Soviet woman taking care of mute, disabled (but opportunistic) Grandma and her own two daughters. She also tries to deal with her crazed ex-husband and to put a little love into her life, with devastating and hilarious results. A warm, wry comedy.
