Americorps
All participants who are American citizens qualify for an annual education award from the Corporation for National Service, part of the National Service Initiative signed into law by President Clinton in 1993.The award is valid for seven years and is available to assist ACE teachers and graduates in repaying federal loans from their undergraduate education, or to help finance future graduate study. ACE and the Corporation for National Service (AmeriCorps) The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) enjoys a unique association with the Corporation for National Service (CNS) and AmeriCorps. In 1994, the Corporation selected ACE, in a highly competitive selection process, as one of eleven National Demonstration Programs. Since then, CNS has generously supported ACE as its largest foundational benefactor. Through both AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, CNS has funded ACE's innovative summer teacher-training and service-learning program. As well, the National Service Trust has provided $4,725 education awards to ACE participants, who are also full-time AmeriCorps members. This year, 147 ACE teachers are eligible for AmeriCorps education awards, which may be used to reduce student loans or pursue future graduate education. What is the Corporation for National Service? Created in 1993 with bipartisan support of Congress, the President, and community groups nationwide, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that administers three national service initiatives: AmeriCorps, which includes hundreds of local and national sponsors, as well as VISTA and the National Civilian Community Corps; National Senior Service
Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and
the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; and What is AmeriCorps? AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with educational awards in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nationŐs critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment. What do AmeriCorps members receive? AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and health coverage while participating in the program. After completing a year of service, they receive an education award of $4,725. This award can be used to help pay off student loans or to finance graduate school or vocational training. Beyond these benefits, members learn new skills, take on new responsibilities, and know the satisfaction of building a community and helping our nation be everything it ought to be. |
