Meals and Housing
Students will live in campus residence halls while at Notre Dame. All meals are provided by the University.
Extracurricular Activities
Special activities, including access to recreational sports facilities, off-campus activities, and social events, will be provided to promote fellowship and camaraderie among program participants.
Location
The University of Notre Dame is located adjacent to the city of South Bend in northern Indiana, just a few miles from the Michigan state line. It is easily accessible via major airlines, AMTRAK, and Interstate 80/90 (Indiana Toll Road). Notre Dame is approximately a two-hour drive from Chicago and three hours from Indianapolis and Detroit.
Costs
African American Scholars is fully underwritten by the University of Notre Dame. All program expenses, meals, housing, extracurricular activities, including round-trip transportation to Notre Dame, are paid for by the University. Admitted students are required to pay a $150 deposit to hold their spot in the seminar. Additionally, students may wish to bring a small amount of spending money for personal expenses.
Activities
Each year the schedule of the Scholars seminar is refined to reflect current issues of leadership facing students and their communities. Time is added each day for recreation, entertainment, and reflection. The major themes of the program are:
- Leadership / Life Priorities and Balance
- Race Relations, Voting, and Politics in Contemporary Society
- Affirmative Action, Diversity and Higher Education
- Spirituality and the African American Community
- The Politics of Representation: African Americans in the Arts
- Admissions, Financial Aid and the College Culture
