Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is the seminar?
July 6 - 12, 2008.

Is African American Scholars only for African American students?
The Scholars seminar examines various dimensions of leadership in the context of the African American experience. The strength of the program is the structure, which requires students to participate fully and to integrate their own experiences with the themes presented in the sessions. Traditionally, students who have participated in the seminar have been African American. However, for students of any race, if the context and focus of the seminar resonate with their identity and experiences, we welcome their application.

Do you have to be Catholic to attend?
This program is for Catholic African American high school students.  We accept applications from students who are non-Catholic if they attend a Catholic high school. The seminar has been successful because the participants share common knowledge about the Catholic faith and thus are able to participate fully in the discussions and activities of the seminar.

What is the cost?
The University of Notre Dame fully underwrites the cost of the Scholars seminar. Admitted students are required to pay a $150 non-refundable confirmation fee to hold their spot in the seminar.  All other costs for the seminar are covered including: round-trip transportation, meals, housing, activities, and seminar supplies. Students are asked to bring money for personal items.

What do I need to bring? How will I get to Notre Dame?
All questions concerning clothing, supplies, transportation, meals, recreation, and other program details are addressed as soon as you are accepted into the seminar. Generally, participants stay in student residence halls; all meals are provided; and recreation is included in the ambitious schedule. The University will schedule and pay for round-trip transportation to Notre Dame.

How many students are selected?
40 students will be selected (20 women, 20 men).

What grade point average (GPA), test scores and/or rank are required?
There is no minimum GPA, standardized test score and/or rank required. However, applications are evaluated individually and each year admission becomes more competitive. Accepted students have typically demonstrated strong leadership abilities and have taken a rigorous class schedule (e.g. AP, Honors, or college preparatory classes). Additionally they have strong standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, PSAT, or PLAN).
