James J. Lyphout

Vice President for Business Operations


James J. Lyphout was elected vice president for business operations at the University of Notre Dame in May, 1999 by the Board of Trustees. He had served as associate vice president for business operations since 1996.

Mr. Lyphout's responsibilities include oversight of the campus infrastructure as well as the planning and design of all construction projects, including the development of the 2002 and 2008 Campus Master Plans.

He is currently overseeing construction of Notre Dame's 29th residence hall, Ryan Hall; Stinson Remick Hall, a multidisciplinary engineering facility; Purcell Pavilion, an addition to the South Dome of the Joyce Center; and a multi-venue athletic project featuring three new football practice fields, a new track facility and new lacrosse and soccer stadiums; Innovation Park, Phase I; nine City Homes along Angela Boulevard and, in conjuction with Indiana University, a cancer research facility to be named Harper Hall. Additionally, he is overseeing the expansion and renovation of Notre Dame's Law School and the renewal of Breen-Phillips, Zahm and Lewis residence halls.

Mr. Lyphout is also responsible for the facilities on all remote campuses, such as the Notre Dame London Centre, the Keough-Notre Dame Study Centre in Dublin, and the University of Notre Dame Hank Environmental Research Center at Land O'Lakes, Wisconsin.

Mr. Lyphout oversees the management of most campus auxiliary operations, including food services, the licensing department, the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, retail operations, ND Marketplace, St. Michael's Laundry, Cedar Grove Cemetery, the Morris Inn and the Conference Center at McKenna Hall.

In addition, he is responsible for the newly established Office of Sustainability, utilities, custodial services, landscape services, warehouse and delivery services, mail services, transportation services, fire protection, and risk management and safety, as well as property acquisition and rental. Currently, he is overseeing the development of Eddy Street Commons, a mixed-use commercial, office, and residential neighborhood south of campus.

Mr. Lyphout serves on the Board of Directors of the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, The Center for the Homeless, Inc. and the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County. He is also a Director of the University of Notre Dame (USA) in England.

A native of East Moline, Illinois, Mr. Lyphout was graduated from Western Illinois University with bachelor's and master's degrees in business in 1969 and 1970, respectively. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-72 and came to Notre Dame from Northwestern University in 1984 as assistant vice president for business affairs.

Mr. Lyphout and his wife, Rose, have two sons, Joe (ND 2000) and J.J.(ND 2008).
