John Duffy Director |
John Duffy is associate professor of English and director of the University Writing Program. He is the author of Writing from These Roots: The Historical Development of Literacy in A Hmong American Community (University of Hawaii Press, 2007), and the co-editor, with Martin Nystrand, of Towards a Rhetoric of Everyday Life: New Directions in Research on Writing, Text, and Discourse (University of Wisconsin Press, 2003). He has published articles on the concept of "preliteracy," the uses of writing in a guerrilla army, and literacy development in an immigrant community. He teaches courses on writing, literacy, rhetoric, and literature. Outside the Writing Center, he enjoys riding his bike up steep hills, listening to Irish music, and predicting national championships for Notre Dame athletic teams. |
Christopher Manley Associate Director |
Chris Manley is a third-year visiting faculty member in the University Writing Program. He holds a BA in English from Notre Dame and an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, because he simply refuses to live anywhere that is not in walking distance of Interstate 80. He is a former Writing Center tutor, a teacher of rhetoric and creative writing, and a writer of fiction. If you come by his office, 206 Coleman-Morse, you can play darts, or NERF for a while, while discussing just about anything of rhetorical or literary merit. He argues that running the Writing Center is probably the best job on campus, since the tutors are the sharpest extracurricular collection of student minds around, and helping writers say what they mean is some of the most rewarding work available. You should ask him sometime about the Carroll Hall boat. |
