Sociologists at Notre Dame are engaged in innovative research on a wide range of topics.  Our faculty members have published influential books and numerous ground-breaking articles in academic journals.  In fact, a recent study shows that Notre Dame Sociology ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to placing articles in the discipline's top three journals.  The Department is particularly strong in the sociology of education, sociology of religion, marriage and family, social movements, political sociology, and cultural sociology.  However, research in the Department cuts across sub-disciplinary and disciplinary boundaries.

Honors and Accolades

Sean Kelly will receive a Spencer Foundation Exemplary Dissertation Award at the March 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New York City.  The 2008 Award recognizes outstanding dissertations in Education completed from 2003-2006.  Professor Kelly’s dissertation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison is titled “Race, Social Class, Student Engagement, and Unequal Literacy Development in Middle School English Classrooms.”  His dissertation research has been published in the Journals Social Science Research, Social Psychology of Education, and Sociology of Education.  The Spencer Foundation supports research that gives promise of yielding new knowledge about education in the United States and abroad.
