CULTURAL CLUBS

This alphabetical club listing represents student cultural clubs registered for the 2008-2009 academic year.  If you would like to have a link added to your club listing, contact the Student Activities Office.

African Students Association
The objective of the African Students Assoc. of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College and Holy Cross College shall be:
- To provide a forum in which the African students of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College can meet and discuss ways to support democratization and overall societal development in Africa.
- To facilitate intelligent and intellectual discourse on economic, political and social issues that affect Africans abroad and at home.
- To foster a spirit of community amongst African students in Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College and Holy Cross College.
- To provide the African students in Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College with a forum for voicing their opinion on issues affecting their educational and social life while attending the two institutions.
- To provide a forum for the sharing of the unique African cultural heritage in all its diversity and particularly inculcate in Africans and the entire academic community of the colleges the rich history and ethos of the people of Africa.
- To help meet the social, recreational and civic needs of the members and their friends through hospitality and participation in programs that meet the aforesaid needs.
- To promote understanding, co-operation, love and harmony among African students and their friends and represent and protect their interests with all due diligence.
- To liaise with other organizations in United States and the world when this shall become necessary for the realization of the objectives of the Association.

Asian American Association of Notre Dame
Our goals as the Asian American Association are to promote awareness and appreciation of Asian and Asian American culture, to act as a resource for students and faculty, and to provide a comfortable setting for social interaction which in turn helps unify and strengthen the Asian American community on the Notre Dame campus.

Asian International Society
The mission of the Asian International Society is to assist in the smooth integration of Asian international students into the Notre Dame student community and to provide a resource for Asian international students to which they can come for guidance. The Asian International Society strives to nurture a feeling of family among its members and see to it that the concerns of Asian international students be addressed with care and enthusiasm.

Black Cultural Arts Council
BCAC is an ethnic organization that responds to the needs of the African-American community by sponsoring, promoting, and supporting intellectual, spiritual, social, entertainment, and community service programs. It is the duty of BCAC to promote and advance traditional African and African-American values and customs which will support the holistic development of its members and persons within and without the Notre Dame community. It is the responsibility of BCAC to provide leadership development opportunities to its membership.

Black Student Association
The purpose of The Black Student Association is to promote unity among Notre Dame’s Black students by:
-Serving as a representative body for Black students
-Acting on issues of importance to the community
-Serving as a support and discussion forum for black organizations, clubs, and affiliates on campus
-Voicing concerns of the Black community to the University.
The BSA will also strive to strengthen the relationship between the Black community and the wider Notre Dame community.

Brazil Club
The purpose of the Brazil Club shall be to foster awareness and information, promote activities in regards to Brazilian culture, or the Portuguese language by coordinating a regular series of roundtable discussions of students who are interested in Brazil; coordinating talks, lectures and cultural events that focus on Brazil; and by creating a database of Brazilian alumni or figures that would promote an interest in Brazil.

Chinese Culture Society
The purpose of Chinese Culture Society shall be to promote Chinese culture awareness within the undergraduate community, reach out to a broader spectrum of people on campus, and in so doing provide more opportunities for people to experience and learn about the rich traditional and pop culture of China. CCS will work toward its goals by:
A. regularly showing Chinese movies and conducting karaoke nights,
B. help organize the Lunar Year Party with the East Asian Language Department,
C. working with the admission office to contact prospective and admitted Chinese and American Chinese undergraduate students so they get to know more about life in Notre Dame as an International Chinese or American Chinese student.

Filipino American Student Organization of Notre Dame

Our goals as the as the Filipino-American Student Organization are to promote awareness and appreciation of the Filipino culture, to act as a resource for students and faculty, and to provide a comfortable setting for social interaction which in turn helps unify and strengthen the Filipino-American community on the Notre Dame campus. The organization is also to maintain an active role in the Filipino community of the Michiana area..

German Club, Notre Dame
The purpose of this club shall be to honor excellence in and to promote the further study of the German language, literature, and civilization.

Hawaii Club - Na Pua Kai 'Ewalu
The purpose of the Hawaii Club is to share the culture of Hawaii with the Notre Dame community through various social and education activities. This will be accomplished by the following means:
*coordinating cultural events for members to participate in.
*performing and sharing the Hawaiian culture with various clubs and organizations both within the Notre Dame community and the community of South Bend.
*attending diversity council meetings.
*foster relationships between alumni of Notre Dame from Hawaii and acting as a support group for incoming freshmen through various activities.

Indian Association of Notre Dame
To promote interest in Indian culture amongst members of the University community through various events related to Indian culture.

Italian Club
The purpose of the Notre Dame Italian Club is to promote a greater understanding of Italian culture within the ND/SMC communities.

Japan Club

The purpose of the Japan Club is to enhance the Notre Dame community’s awareness of Japanese culture, interact with the Japanese members of the Michiana area, prepare Year in Japan Program applicants for their experience, and correspond with the Notre
Dame students studying in Japan to keep them up to date with campus events.

Korean Student Association

The Korean Student Association celebrates Korean culture and heritage. The Korean Student Association endeavors to build socio-political awareness of Korean-American and Asian-American issues within the Notre Dame community.

La Alianza

The Mission of La Alianza is to unite, educate, and embrace the Latino community and to address the issues and concerns that directly and indirectly affect its members. We strive to:
1. Develop a strong political, cultural, educational, and social base within the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College, and the surrounding Latino community.
2. To increase campus awareness and promote interest in the Latino culture and traditions through campus activities.
3. To help members preserve the Latino cultural identity through regularly scheduled meetings and sponsorship of ethnically oriented activities.

Le Cercle Francais (French Club)
Le Cercle Français (French Club) strives to promote French language and culture on campus.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, UND Chapter
The purpose and aims of the Notre Dame chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People shall be to improve the political, social and economic status of student minority groups: to eliminate racial prejudice; to keep the public aware of the adverse effects of racial discrimination. In addition, it’s objectives shall be to inform students of problems affecting African-Americans and other minority groups; to advance the overall status of all student minorities on campus; and to develop effective leadership skills. These objectives shall be pursued in accordance with the policies of the Association within the framework of the University’s regulations.

Native American Student Association of Notre Dame
- The primary purpose of the organization is to provide an environment that is conductive to the intrinsic socio-cultural needs and desires of the Native American students at Notre Dame. NASAND wishes to strive to promote a sense of unity among the Notre Dame Native American community by providing an atmosphere that Native American students can relate to, both socially and culturally.
- It is NASAND's purpose to educate ourselves (Native Americans) cross-culturally and others (non-Natives) about the major common concerns of Native Americans. Through education, NASAND wishes to enrich and encourage individual understanding and awareness of Native Americans and how Native Americans perceive themselves. Education may consist of a variety of the following contributing factors, but not limited to unbiased historical presentations, cultural presentations and activities, literature, speakers, and field trips.
- NASAND shall address the problem of retention among Native Americans at Notre Dame. In addition to the aforementioned goals, NASAND recognizes the need to provide academic support to its members in an effort to maximize member's educational pursuits.

Organizacion Latino Americana
The purpose of OLA shall be to create an organization to promote understanding of the different cultures of the Latin American countries. OLA will work towards its goals by:
- Nurturing relationships between Latin American students and people interested in Latin American culture.
- Welcoming incoming fellow Latin American students.
- Strengthening the Latin American community and its presence in Notre Dame.

Polish Club, Notre Dame
The purpose of the club shall be to promote the heritage of Polish-American life in America and how it relates to the Notre Dame family in South Bend.

Russian Club
The purpose of this club will be to study the culture and language of Russia through social and academic activities, promote awareness of Russian culture throughout the community, and foster relationships among members.

Spanish Club, University of Notre Dame

The purpose of the Spanish Club is to provide an enjoyable environment for speaking the Spanish language and appreciating the Spanish culture.

Texas Club
The purpose of this club is to promote appreciation of and pride in Texas history and culture. The club shall create an environment in which students, faculty, and staff of Texan heritage can meet, interact, and celebrate their Texanism (e.g. social events, mixers, movies & music, networking with Texas alumni, educational presentations, rider board, mutual support through inclement weather, etc.).

Vietnamese Student Association of Notre Dame

The purpose of the Vietnamese Student Association of Notre Dame (VSAND) shall be to foster and promote the appreciation for cultural diversity at the University of Notre Dame through coordinating activities that further the exploration of the Vietnamese Heritage. The mission of the club shall be attained through the following means:
- Coordinating informational meetings and trips to various shops, restaurants, and other relevant locales so students can learn and experience more about the Vietnamese culture and people.
- Hosting and coordinating, along with the local Vietnamese community, an annual Tet or Vietnamese New Years in addition to various other local events in the community.
- Fostering and maintaining a close relationship with the local Vietnamese community so interested students can further experience the Vietnamese culture through meeting and associating with the local Vietnamese.
