The 2002 REU effort in Haiti involved development of
a survey tool to study two phenomenon: (i) Willingness of the local
population to pay for water and/or well repair and (ii) the relationship
among depth to water, latrine design, and vector disease. The survey
was developed at Notre Dame by two of the REU students (Pam Crane and
Mollie Williams) who then travelled to the Leogane region of Haiti to
apply this survey tool.
It is very likely that this effort will continue in northern Haiti
where Notre Dame has an
ongoing well repair project in the Cap Haitien area.
For those with interest in seeing the initial results of the 2002 surveys,
the portion of the 2002 survey effort related to well
location and well repair are included on this page. The information is
subdivided by Village name. Within each village name, you can view one
or more pages of general information (this is usually where the gps
coordinates will be found) and one or more pages of information on the
condition of the wells (as observed by Pam Crane and Mollie Williams during
the summer of 2002).
This work was supported by the
U.S. National Science Foundation through our REU site on water resources
in developing countries
In the following documents, I have included only the well information and
the cover information page which includes the local responses to the questions
asked of the village leader. You can view the full survey (with questions to
the village leader asked in the first part of the survey) in either english or
creole at the following sites.
Here are the survey questions in English
Here are the survey questions in Creole
The following link will show you a pdf of a rough
map of the location of the various villages
The links below will take you to the pages for each of the villages
