Academic Programs
The Reilly Center provides administrative support and
a campus “home base” for three distinctive educational
programs:
The Graduate Program in History and Philosophy
of Science (HPS), established in 1989, offers courses of
study leading to both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. It provides
advanced training primarily for students intent on a career
of teaching and scholarship at the college and university
level. The program relies on the expertise of some 20 faculty
representing six University departments, making it one of
the larger research groups in this field in the United States.

The Undergraduate Minor Program in Science,
Technology, and Values (STV) is available to all undergraduates
at the University regardless of their major field of study.
This 15-credit-hour program permits students in any of the
University’s colleges to take a coherent cluster of
cross-listed STV courses organized around such themes as
Technology and Public Policy; History and Philosophy of
Medicine; Science and Religion; Environmental Science and
Ethics; Biotechnology and Society; and Medical Ethics. Currently
nearly 30 faculty from different colleges of the University
offer cross-listed courses in the program, and approximately
130 undergraduates are enrolled in the STV minor. The STV
program maintains close relationships with Notre Dame’s
Center for Environmental Science and Technology and with
its undergraduate program in environmental science. Greg Macklem, Acting Director (gmacklem@nd.edu)
The Five-Year, Double Degree Program in
Arts and Letters/Engineering enables Notre Dame undergraduates
to earn both B.A. and B.S. degrees in 10 semesters of course
work. It provides a select group of students the opportunity
to combine the values of an intensive liberal arts education
with the professional training required for an engineering
degree. To encourage students to take advantage of the Five-Year
Program, an endowed scholarship fund administered jointly
by the Reilly Center and the financial aid office has been
established by the Center’s major donor. It provides
modest, need-based scholarship support for juniors and seniors
enrolled in the program, as well as very substantial financial
aid packages for those in their fifth, and final, year of
study. The most outstanding members of each fifth-year class
receive the designation of Reilly Scholar, and are recognized
for their achievements at graduation. Gerald McKenny, Director (gmckenny@nd.edu)
