The
purpose of the Peer Advising Program is to enable first-year
students to engage in discussions with reliable and informed
upperclass students. During the meetings, the undergraduate
peer advisors attempt to determine how the students are adjusting
and progressing. They provide information. They try to identify
problems. They exchange information on matters pertaining to
campus life, residence hall activities, and study habits. They
do not counsel first-year students on formal academic, career,
or serious personal matters. The peer advisors report on all
of their interviews to the advisor, director of the team. Communication
between the peer advisor and the first-year student is at the
level of information exchange. Although the peer advisors may
share their own personal experiences with the students, no major
attempt is made by the peer advisor to resolve developmental
problems, which are the responsibility of the academic advisor.
Nevertheless,
the peer advisors should be aware of the range of concerns
first-year students may express and be able to respond appropriately.
Also, they should be aware of the range of services provided
by the First Year of Studies. In addition, peer advisors should
have a general knowledge regarding the academic programs of
the University.
