Policy on Notre Dame Students Attending Saint Mary’s College International Programs
(Applies to study abroad programs commencing in Fall 2007 and beyond)

Notre Dame (ND) and Saint Mary's College (SMC) have agreed to allow a limited number of ND students to attend SMC international programs, provided that they take a Leave of Absence from ND and follow the provisions below.

  1. Depending on the particular SMC international program, different rules apply:

    • NON-UNIQUE SMC INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS – ND students intending to apply to a SMC international program, for which there is a linguistically or culturally similar program at ND, must have first applied to the similar ND program and at least one other ND international program.  ND students must have applied to at least two Spanish language programs at ND if they intend to apply to the SMC program in Spain.  If ND's Office of International Studies (OIS) is unable to accommodate the student into one of its international programs, then the student may be permitted to apply to the similar SMC international program, except Fremantle.  OIS reserves the right to offer a spring applicant admission to a fall program, or to offer an applicant admission to a program that s/he indicated was a second- or lower-choice. If on March 1, a ND student is still waitlisted for all Notre Dame programs to which s/he applied, the student may contact the relevant OIS program manager(s) and request a release form to apply to a non-unique SMC fall or academic-year program. OIS will sign release forms for SMC spring programs after September 1.
  • UNIQUE SMC INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS – ND students who wish to apply to a unique SMC international program – Semester Around the World or Women’s Studies in Europe – do not need to apply to a ND international program to be eligible for admission. Consequently, ND applicants to unique SMC international programs do not need to obtain a release form from OIS.
  1. Before application to any SMC international programs, an ND student must complete the SMC course approval form and obtain signatures from his/her relevant departmental advisor(s) and dean.  The advisors will be verifying if the proposed SMC courses can be used to fulfill any ND degree requirements.

  2. The ND student must submit the SMC course approval form and the OIS release form (required for non-unique programs) with his/her SMC program application to the Office of Intercultural and International Learning at St. Mary’s College by the deadlines posted by SMC.
  1. If a ND student is accepted into any SMC program, s/he must apply for an official Leave of Absence from the dean of his/her ND college before confirming acceptance with SMC.
  1. During the semester that a ND student is abroad on a SMC international program, s/he will be enrolled as a student of SMC and is subject to the rules of SMC.
  1. Each ND student attending a SMC international program will be billed by SMC for all fees associated with the SMC international program.
  1. ND students on a Leave of Absence are not entitled to receive Notre Dame gifts in their Financial Aid package.

  2. The grades earned in courses taken during a Leave of Absence will not appear on the student’s ND transcript, nor will they be computed in the student’s ND GPA.  They will be subject to the same ND policies as transfer credits earned at another institution.
