Unique Valedictorian

For the first time in memory, and probably the first time in school history, Notre Dame's valedictorian was a transfer student.

Carolyn Weir was also unusual in that she was co-valedictorian at Greensburg (Pennsylvania) Central Catholic High School with Brian O'Donoghue '01, Notre Dame's student body president this past year.

A Program of Liberal Studies and theology double major, Weir was chosen valedictorian from among the University's top-ranked students. She achieved a 3.95 grade point average and was a member of the Dean's List every semester after transferring as sophomore from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

In addition to her classroom accomplishments, she was a resident assistant in Breen-Phillips Hall, a member and officer of the Notre Dame Folk Choir for three years, and a participant in and team leader of Notre Dame Encounter retreats. Her volunteer service included work at the Center for the Homeless, Logan Center and the Martin Luther King Center in South Bend. She plans to work for the U.S. Catholic Conference as an education research associate, focusing on public policy issues related to Catholic schools.
